Boalt Bulletin Board

Welcome from the Law Library

Welcome to all new students and welcome back to those of you returning for your second or third round.
We have two new displays to check out. In the Library Lobby you’ll see Famous Trials and Their Legacies: Selections from The Robbins Collection and the Boalt Law Library. More details about this next week. And in the Main Reading Dancing Backwards in High Heels: Women at Berkeley Law, 1906 to World War Two (a reference to Ginger Rogers’ claim that in those classic Hollywood musicals she was expected to do everything Fred Astaire did – but to do it backwards while wearing high-heels). Please stop by and have a look.

Computer Labs And Computing At Boalt
Remote Access to Files: BSpace

Over the summer Webfiles services were discontinued by campus. The replacement is bSpace (https://bspace.berkeley.edu/). bSpace provides 1GB of secure online file storage, web publishing and file sharing through a web browser. You can access your files anywhere around the world. bSpace will also host course websites and materials for your classes.

Printing Reminders
Each student is given 1250 free pages of printing (non-color) for the academic year. Any printing over the 1250 page limit will cost $0.10 per page. However, to encourage responsible use of paper there is a price break on double-sided printing which will cost $0.16 per double-sided sheet. Color printing costs $0.75 per page.

In the lab, print software keeps track of your printing and gives you your balance before every print job. You can also check your balance by logging on to any of the Print Release Stations in the lab or in the copy room (once the temporary lockers are removed and the printer is returned to this location. ) If the number is in parentheses, that means you have gone beyond your annual print allotment and the amount listed is what you owe for printing. Any printing done remotely from your laptop to the networked printers will be charged against your allowed 1250 free pages. You will be notified of the cost of the print job before you submit the job.

If you are a returning student with an outstanding balance from last semester your lab account is currently disabled. You can ask a labtech how much you owe and can then submit payment to Room M130C with checks made payable to UC Regents (please include your login name and year in school on the check).

Software @ Berkeley
One of the benefits of being part of a large university is that the institution is able to provide software to students, faculty and staff. All of the important software that you will need to keep your laptop and home computer healthy is available on the Software Central website:
http://software-central.berkeley.edu/

Of particular importance is the Symantec Client Security package that will protect your computer against viruses and worms. You’ll need your CalNet ID and Passphrase to successfully download and install the software.

Library Tours for 1Ls and Transfers
If you haven’t signed up for a tour of the library there is still time. Just swing by the Reference Desk and choose a time that works for you.
